Validating Digital Agriculture in the Field: Insights from the FAPPR Farmer Consultation in Romania

At the heart of the AGRARIAN project is a core principle: technological innovation must directly address the real-world challenges agricultural producers face. On September 10, 2026, as part of Pilot 2 (Task 4.3: Field Crops – Scenario 2), our partners at FAPPR (Forum of the Agricultural Producers in Romania) hosted a dedicated Farmer Consultation and Platform Demo in Slobozia, Ialomița County, Romania.

The event brought together a group of farmers who are already actively utilising the AGRARIAN platform and its integrated weather-station IoT data in their daily operations. The primary goal was to step away from theoretical models and gather unfiltered, practical feedback on how the platform performs under the pressures of real-world broadacre farm management.

The Objective: Qualitative Validation through Co-Design

The consultation was structured around several key objectives:

  • Gather practical feedback from end-users familiar with the AGRARIAN platform.
  • Evaluate the usefulness of current functionalities for day-to-day farm management.
  • Identify additional data layers and features needed by farmers.
  • Critically assess the practical relevance of automated alerts and recommendations.
  • Collect qualitative feedback to guide the final refinement of the platform before project completion.

The session featured a demonstration reviewing core functionalities and sensor integrations, followed by an open dialogue on practical use cases and current system limitations.

Key Insights and Farmer Feedback

The open discussion provided invaluable, hands-on insights that are currently shaping the final iterations of the AGRARIAN platform. The key takeaways from the consultation include:

1. The Need for Historical Sensor Data

While real-time sensor values are critical, participating farmers highlighted the paramount importance of accessing historical time-series data. The ability to view past data allows producers to follow environmental trends, compare different growing periods, and make more informed interpretations of current field conditions based on historical precedent.

2. Integrating a Broader Field Dataset

Overall, participants affirmed the platform’s usefulness for supporting farm-level decisions. However, they stressed that the reliability and relevance of the system’s recommendations are directly tied to the volume and diversity of the data ingested. Farmers advocated for expanding the dataset to include a wider variety of field metrics to further enhance the platform’s analytical accuracy.

3. Adapting Rapeseed Sowing Alerts to Local Realities

A specific discussion point centred on the platform’s alerts regarding the optimal sowing period for rapeseed. Farmers pointed out that defining a narrow, rigid timeframe is impractical. In Romania, the rapeseed sowing window can be quite long—ranging from August until approximately mid-October—and is heavily dictated by highly localised soil moisture and microclimate conditions. Feedback indicated that these specific agronomic alerts require a more flexible, locally adapted approach.

4. Transparency in Weather Forecast Sources

Trust is a crucial component of digital adoption. Farmers expressed a strong interest in understanding the specific origins of the weather forecast data utilised by the platform. Knowing the source of the meteorological data is deemed essential for users to confidently rely on the subsequent recommendations and alerts generated by the system.

Looking Ahead:

The Slobozia consultation successfully contributed to the qualitative validation of the AGRARIAN platform within the context of Pilot 2. By directly engaging end-users, we have successfully identified clear priorities relating to data access, recommendation flexibility, and platform transparency.

Overall, the session confirmed the practical relevance of the AGRARIAN platform while providing clear, actionable directions for further improvement. We extend our sincere gratitude to the FAPPR team for organising this vital event and to the participating farmers of Ialomița County for their essential contributions to the future of European agriculture.
